Harmonium is a software synthesizer built around the concept of a harmonic filterbank. It is designed to take complex sounds such as field recordings, white noise, samples, or external inputs and filter them into pitched material. The instrument creates tone by subtracting everything except the harmonic series, allowing the timbre to evolve naturally from the complex spectrum of the source.
Beyond that, it is also an additive synthesizer that allows for highly detailed and evolving timbres. Individual partials can move independently in pitch, amplitude, and position in space, creating melodious music through the highlighting of different partials.
Harmonium was created as a way to gain a finer control of timbre than what I am used to finding in most software synthesizers, and as I do in all my music, to take the harmonic series and its implications as the musical material to be worked with in an effort to reveal its beauty.
